Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final at the Olympic Games. She secured her spot in the final after defeating Yusneylys Guzmán 5-0 in the semifinal. Vinesh is now poised to compete for the gold medal on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Vinesh stunned the wrestling community by defeating reigning champion Yui Susaki in a tactical first-round match. She continued her impressive performance with a hard-fought quarterfinal victory to advance to the semifinals in the 50kg category.
In the ongoing Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat made it to the semifinals of the women's 50 kg freestyle category after a 7-5 win over Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Vinesh took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but Oksana mounted a challenge in the second period. However, Vinesh, a World Championships medalist, held off the Ukrainian to secure her semifinal spot.
Vinesh's next opponent in the semifinals, which starts at 10:25 PM IST, will be either Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, a Pan American Games champion, or Gabija Dilyte of Lithuania. Vinesh began her Paris Olympics campaign brilliantly by defeating top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the women's 50kg freestyle round of 16 match on Tuesday. Susaki, a three-time world champion and current Asian level champion, was leading 1-0 at the end of the first period, but Vinesh made a remarkable comeback in the second period to secure a 3-2 victory and advance to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Nisha Dahiya's Paris Olympics campaign ended in the quarterfinals of the women's 68 kg competition after an 8-10 loss to North Korea's Pak Sol Gum on Monday. Despite leading 8-2 at one point, Nisha faced an injury and had to take medical timeouts, which allowed Sol Gum to stage a comeback and win the match. In the round of 16, Nisha had defeated Tetiana Sova 6-4 at the Champs de Mars Arena, making it to the quarterfinals in her debut Olympics.
